The US Army War College recently hosted its twenty-ninth annual Strategy Conference. This year, the conference’s theme was “Strategic Leadership 2030: Transcending Challenges in a Time of Deep Change.” Speaking on a panel about what it will mean to be an effective leader in the future, MWI Non-Resident Fellow Maj. ML Cavanaugh discussed the key characteristics of great military leaders historically—especially, superior judgment—and how those characteristics will apply in a changing world and with changes in the character of warfare. It’s an important and fascinating exploration of the essential core components of leadership.
You can watch Cavanaugh’s remarks below. Retired US Air Force Maj. Gen. Charles Dunlap has also posted a transcript of the remarks at his website, Lawfire.
Captivating,
Duly Noted,
and thanks for the five years work.

All three generals had the political acumen to succeed in the senior positions.
The general you want to have commanding you in a tactical combat is someone like General Patton or Hollingsworth (http://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/art/swj-book-review-danger-79er-life-and-times-lieutenant-general-james-f-Hollingsworth ). You could look back and they likely would be there and they cared about the troops, not checking the squares.
After decades and continuing through today, business degrees are the norm – not military subjects.
I shutter to think who will be calling the shots in the future, especially given the PC climate that pervades all the services.
Will we ever learn from our mistakes? From our history? From the history of many nations that have faltered?
