The first half of Master Sgt. Earl Plumlee’s career took him from the Oklahoma National Guard to the Marine Corps’ force reconnaissance community. In the second of our two episodes with him, he describes his decision to join the Army, his selection and qualification as a Special Forces soldier, and the attack on his team’s base in eastern Afghanistan that eventually resulted in him receiving the Medal of Honor.
On August 28, 2013, the Taliban launched a complex attack on Forward Operating Base Ghazni. The attackers put a sixty-foot hole in the perimeter of the camp and infiltrated fighters dressed in Afghan National Army uniforms. Plumlee and his fellow Green Berets responded to the attack only to find themselves outnumbered and receiving heavy fire. Plumlee joins this episode of The Spear to recount his actions and those of his teammates as they sought to seal the breach and repel the attackers.
